biography

Ski instructor and hut keeper

Ferdinand Hirscher grew up in Annaberg in the Lammertal , where he initially worked as a ski instructor and lumberjack . When his car broke down in winter, he met his wife Sylvia, who came from The Hague . Their first son, Marcel, was born in 1989. Brother Leon was born in 1996. In 1989 Hirscher took over the lease of the 1467  m above sea level. A. on the Gosaukamm , the Stuhlalm, which he looked after for 14 summers as a hut manager . He also worked as a mountain guide , while he continued to work as a ski instructor in winter. He is co-owner of an Annaberg ski school in the Dachstein-West ski area , where his wife is also active as a ski instructor.

Racing

In his youth, Hirscher was a ski racer himself and measured himself against, among others, the later European Cup winner and professional world champion Werner Herzog . Due to the financial risk, however, he decided against starting his own career as a professional athlete in the USA . Between March 1999 and April 2004 he competed in several races in the FIS Masters Cup in Austria .

Hirscher gained international fame as the supervisor of his highly successful son Marcel, who first attracted greater attention by winning the overall World Cup in 2011/12 . His younger son Leon had to give up racing because of a hip disease. Ferdinand played an important role in Marcel Hirscher's team, which was set up apart from the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) . He is regarded as a meticulous “tinkerer” who actively participated in the coordination of materials by regularly trying out his son's skis himself. He was present as a marshal at most of the races and provided the successful athlete with information about the prevailing conditions by telephone. Because Ferdinand Hirscher suffers from a fear of flying , he was unable to accompany his son to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , the 2015 World Championships in Vail or the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang . Nevertheless, he was present at the 2010 Games in Vancouver .

In addition to his work as a ski supervisor, he trained the future motocross world champion in the MX3 / 650 class and Dakar rally winner Matthias Walkner .

In November 2013 Marcel Hirscher named the reindeer , which he won for his victory in the Levi World Cup slalom , "Ferdl" after his father. Ferdinand Hirscher's visual trademark is his distinctive mustache .
