The Gosaukamm is a subordinate, small mountain range in the Dachstein Mountains in Austria .

Despite its small size, the Gosaukamm still forms an unmistakable backdrop over the Gosau valley . The border between the federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria runs over its rugged rock ridge . The Gosaukamm stretches in a north-west-south-east direction, starting on the plateau of the Zwieselalm with the Gablonzer Hut, over numerous jagged rock peaks that reach heights of over 2,000 meters, up to the highest elevation of the group, the Bischofsmütze . The actual Dachstein Mountains then begin east of the Steiglpass ( 2018  m ).

In the following list, the most important peaks are named according to the geographical order (from northwest to southeast):

In addition, there are other subordinate peaks, especially on the Bischofsmütze, which, however, do not play a major role in terms of tourism.

Hiking trails and shelters

The most famous hiking trail leads as a classic mountain tour around the Gosaukamm . Sure-footed mountain hikers can tackle the tour in one or two day stages. The starting point is the front of the Gosau Lakes , from there it goes over the Gablonzer Hütte , the Stuhlalm and the Theodor-Körner-Hütte on the west side of the Gosaukamm without any summit climbs along to the Hofpürglhütte . You can spend the night there, then change over the Steiglpass to the northeast side the next day and descend again to the Vorderen Gosau Lake. Along this path, numerous impressions of the Gosaukamm are brought closer without having to deal with large differences in altitude.

The exposed climbs on the rocky peaks of the Gosaukamm are much less used. Only a few can be climbed via marked and partially secured alpine trails. Surefootedness, a head for heights and climbing agility are required in any case. There is not a single easy hiking mountain in the Gosaukamm. The most visited peaks are the Große Donnerkogel, the Strichkogel, the Angerstein and the Mandlkogel. The former is approached from the Gablonzer Hütte, while the other three require the Stuhlalm or Theodor-Körner-Hütte as a starting point. Incidentally, there is no climb to the Bischofsmütze, it can only be reached by climbing. The starting point for your ascent is in any case the Hofpürglhütte, which, by the way, can be reached the quickest from Filzmoos .

Ski touring

In winter, extreme ski tours are possible on the Gosaukamm despite extremely steep slopes and predominantly rocky falls . Most of the time, suitable notches are chosen between the peaks in order to be able to ascend and descend the cirque. Ski tours in the Gosaukamm are definitely only recommended for experienced and local people due to the steep inclines and the high risk of avalanches. The goals of ski tourers are:

  • Sulzkar and Strichkogelscharte
  • Weitkar and Weitkarscharte
  • Wide Zahring
  • Chair hole and chair hole notch
  • Kamplbrunnspitze and Leckkogel
  • Ahornkar and Mitterkogel

To the northwest is the Dachstein-West ski area .
