Werner Herzog (born January 3, 1962 in Maria Alm ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He won three races in the European Cup and was professional world champion in 1988.
Career
After success in the youth field, Herzog was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), but his career was nearing the end as early as 1978 when the then 16-year-old suffered a five-fold fracture of the lower leg in the European Cup downhill run from Artesina . After several months of injury, Herzog was able to take part in races again next winter and took eighth place in the downhill at the 1979 European Junior Championships in Achenkirch . Over the next few years, the Salzburg native concentrated more and more on the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. He won a total of three races in the European Cup in 1983 and 1984 (two giant slaloms and a combination) and came seventh in the overall European Cup of the 1983/1984 season . From the winter of 1981/1982, Herzog also made several appearances in the World Cup , in which, however, he remained without points.
After a cruciate ligament rupture in 1985, Herzog lost his membership in the ÖSV. He switched from amateurs to professionals and took part in races in the American professional racing series from the fall of 1986. He was successful from the start, won several races in his first winter, finished second in the slalom championship in 1987 and was named Rookie of the Year in the same year . Herzog celebrated his greatest success on the professional tour at the beginning of April 1988 when he became professional world champion in giant slalom in Aspen . On the same day his son Alexander was born in Austria, who was also a ski racer and was a member of the ÖSV B-team until 2011. In the overall ranking of the professional tour in 1988, Herzog came third with prize money of over 70,000 US dollars . After two more seasons on the professional tour, in which he mainly competed in races in Japan and celebrated a few victories, he ended his career as a ski racer. Herzog later began playing golf . He became a golf coach and won the World Ski & Golf Championship in 2005.
