Quercegrossa is a district (Italian Frazione ) of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Monteriggioni in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

Quercegrossa is also part of the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga (east of the main road) and Monteriggioni (west of the main road). This main road is the SR / SS 222 (Strada Regionale or Strada Statale, also called Via Chiantigiana ), which runs from Siena through the Chianti region to Florence . Quercegrossa is 8 km north of the provincial capital Siena, 7 km west of Monteriggioni, 8 km south of Castellina in Chianti and 16 km northwest of Castelnuovo Berardenga on the river Staggia . The regional capital Florence is about 40 km north. The place is at 342 m. Quercegrossa is the most populous district of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The postcode is 53019 and therefore the same as that of Castelnuovo Berardenga.

history

Quercegrossa (also Quercia grossa , German large oak , in the plural large oaks ) was first mentioned in 1111 as Castello (castle, also called Castello di Quercia grossa ) in the documents of the monastery Monastero delle Trafisse . From the 13th century the place became important to the Republic of Siena, which bordered there with the Republic of Florence, and was fortified from 1215 to 1219. In 1232 the place was destroyed by the Florentine troops in the war between the two republics, but immediately rebuilt by Siena.

Attractions

  • Chiesa dei Santi Giacomo e Niccolò , Romanesque church in the center of the village on the Castelnovese side, which was first mentioned in 1318. The church was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1798 and then rebuilt. In 1909 the campanile was restored, in 1957 the church was expanded and restored. Contains the work Pietà (painted terracotta statues from the 15th century) by Francesco di Giorgio , who probably worked here with Giacomo Cozzarelli .
  • Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo , also San Michele a Petroio , church just north of the village in the Località Petroio, municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The church was first mentioned in documents from 1074. Initially, the church belonged to the Badia Fiorentina , from the establishment of the border between Siena and Florence in 1203 then to the area of ​​influence of Siena. 2003-2004 the church was restored. The church still contains the floor from the time it was built.
