history
The battle of Montaperti
On September 4, 1260, a historic battle took place between the Ghibellines of Siena and the Guelphs of Florence. Here the powerful Florentine army, led by Bocca degli Abati, suffered a heavy defeat against the Sienese army, which was allied with King Manfred of Sicily .
This conflict was then taken up again by Dante Alighieri and made even more famous by the mention in his comedy : « The agony and the great damage that colored the Arbia red. ». In Canto 10 of Hell, Dante and Virgil , his guide, arrive among the heretics, among whom is Farinata degli Uberti, while in Canto 32 he meets Bocca degli Abati.
