Bettolle is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality of Sinalunga in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 5 kilometers east of the capital Sinalunga and about 40 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Siena in the Chiana valley . In addition to the Chiana, the Torrenti Esse and Foenna are important waters not far from the village. The place is in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza and is therefore subordinate to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . Bettole is at 308 meters, has about 2500 inhabitants and is therefore the largest district of Sinalunga. The closest places to the main town of Sinalunga are the main towns of Foiano della Chiana and Torrita di Siena , both are also approx. 5 km away.

history

The place was already inhabited by the Etruscans and was first documented in a donation in 1014 and then in 1040. The castle of the Senese counts Cacciaconti della Scialenga was built around 1100 when Castrum Betullarum was under the government in Siena from 1266, who set up a Podestà . In the conflict between Siena and Florence , Bettolle was besieged in 1553 by Ascanio della Corgna from Castiglione del Lago and set on fire. In 1593 the place asked the lords of Sinalunga to join the place. This request was granted. This was confirmed in the territorial reform of 1778 by Pietro Leopoldo d'Asburgo-Lorena and Bettolle officially became a district of Sinalunga. The place experienced a significant boom after the Bonifica ( melioration ), which took place in the years from 1788 to the 1830s. The place received a further boost in the 19th century with the construction of the motorway junction (see traffic).
