Marcus (Bishop of Rome)
Marcus († October 7, 336 ) was bishop of Rome for a few months in 336 . Prior to his election on January 18, he was Bishop of Ostia .
It is reported that he was a Roman , but little is known about his life. There is evidence that the early lists of bishops and martyrs known as Depositio episcoparum and Depositio martyrum were drawn up during his pontificate . According to the Liber Pontificalis , he should also have determined that in future the Bishop of Ostia should consecrate the new Bishop of Rome . His term of office falls during a period of heated disputes over Arianism .
He had two basilicas built in Rome , the Titulus Marci and Santa Balbina on the Via Ardeatina. He was buried in the latter church.
The feast day of Saint Marcus is October 7th. He was and is often confused with the Roman martyr Marcus (feast June 18 ), near whom he was buried.
