Marcellus I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcellus I († 309 ) was probably bishop of Rome from May 307 to 309 .

He succeeded Marcellinus after the longest vacancy in papal history, which lasted four years. Marcellus took on the task of reorganizing and rebuilding the church after it was broken up in the Diocletian persecution of Christians . After the Liber Pontificalis he established 25 titular churches . He built a coemeterium in Via Salaria opposite the Priscilla catacomb .

Because he advocated harsh punishments against apostate Christians during past persecutions, he was banished from Rome in 309 under Emperor Maxentius due to tumults . He died that same year and was buried in the Catacomb of Calixtus .

He is represented with the attributes donkey and manger .

His feast days are January 16 (Catholic) and June 7 (Orthodox).
