The Formone is a 16 km long river ( Torrente ) in the Val d'Orcia in the region Tuscany in Italy, the Province of Siena crosses from south to north and the northern municipalities of Castiglione d'Orcia and Radicofani to Pienza as a left tributary of the Orcia opens .
course
The river has its source at a western branch of the Monte Amiata mountain near the Poggio Cirillo (706 m) and the Pianoro dello Zoccolino , an area north of the center of Abbadia San Salvatore and south of Bagni San Filippo (district of Castiglione d'Orcia). He spends a total of 3 km in the municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore. From here it flows briefly to the east and passes under the Via Cassia (here coincides with the Via Francigena ), where it joins the Fosso Formoncino , which is less than 1 km long . From here it runs as a border river between Abbadia San Salvatore and Radicofani to the north. After about a kilometer, at the level of Bagni San Filippo, it becomes the border river between Castiglione d'Orcia (west) and Radicofani (east of the Formone), which it remains until its mouth. Here the 2 km long Fosso Bianco enters from the left, which brings in the thermal waters of Bagni San Filippo near the bridge Ponte sul Formone (435 m, also Ponte del Formone ). First the Torrente then runs parallel to Via Cassia for a few kilometers and passes the old post office of Ricorsi (belonged to Campiglia d'Orcia ), then it turns slightly to the northeast and follows the provincial road Strada Provinciale SP 40a . On the left there are calanchi and biancans made of clay minerals , on the right there is the town of Contignano and then the fortress Castelvecchio d'Orcia (also called Castelvecchio di Radicofani) with the parish church of Sant'Eustachio a Castelvecchio.
In the municipality of Castiglione d'Orcia the river is 6 km and that of Radicofani 7 km. After the Podere Molinello , the Formone flows into the Orcia as a left tributary .
Since 1995 the Crete dell'Orcia e del Formone area has been part of the Natura 2000 reserve .
