geography

The place is about 10 kilometers north of the capital Radicofani and about 50 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Siena in the Orciatal ( Val d'Orcia ). Contignano is in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza and is therefore subordinate to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . Contignano is 479 meters and has about 280 inhabitants. The closest place to the main town Radicofani is Bagni San Filippo , part of Castiglione d'Orcia . Pienza , Monticchiello (district of Pienza) and Chianciano Terme are approx. 10 km away. The place is located on a ridge between the Formone and Orcia rivers , about 4 km south of their confluence.

history

The church of Santa Maria Assunta in the center.

The place was first mentioned in 1028, when Ildebrando IV of the Aldobrandeschi (Ildebrando degli Aldobrandeschi) sold Contignano to Foscolo di Pietro. His son and his wife Maiza inherited the place and bequeathed it a year later to the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata . The donation was confirmed by Otto IV in 1210 . In the early 14th century Contignano belonged to the Farnese , who came to the place in 1303 under Pietro di Ranuccio di Pepone Farnese and made a pact with Orvieto in 1313 . In 1339 the Farnese changed their alliances and subordinated themselves to Siena, but in 1379 the situation arose in which the population of Contignano fought and defeated the Bretoni, allies of the Farnesi, for Siena. On August 6, 1390, the Farnese sold the place for 5000 Fiorini to Cione Salimbeni ( Cione di Sandro Salimbeni , † March 2, 1397 in Castiglione d'Orcia ). He was followed by his son Niccolò di Cione di Sandro, called Cocco , who was openly hostile to Siena. In 1405 he made a (provisional) peace with Siena, but was expelled from the town in December 1409. On December 7, 1409, Siena took control of the place, guaranteeing autonomy and economic advantages.

From 1501 to 1515, the surrounding area and the town itself, with the exception of the castle, were under the control of Antonio Giordano from Venafro , who was then advisor to Pandolfo Petrucci . After his death in 1512, Giordano fell out with Borghese Petrucci three years later and left the Republic of Siena. After the defeat of the Republic of Siena by Florence in 1555 and the four other years of resistance in exile from Montalcino , Contignano also came to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1559 after the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis . On behalf of Grand Duke Cosimo III. de 'Medici gave Bartolomeo Gherardini the place in 1676 to the Bandinelli (Cerretani Bandinelli Paparoni, also Bianchi Bandinelli).

Since January 1st, 1778 Contignano has been part of Radicofani.
