Savudrija ( Italian : Salvore ) is a small seaside resort in Croatia on the northwestern tip of the Istrian peninsula and part of Umag . The settlement is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Trieste and 8 kilometers north of the center of Umag. About 400 inhabitants live permanently in Savudrija. Their economic basis lies primarily in tourism and in tourism-dependent professions. Self-sufficient agriculture, especially the cultivation of vegetables and viticulture, is carried out on the fertile terra-rossa soils of the district. The autochthonous vines like Teran or Malvazija have to give way to modern and high-yielding varieties, especially Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc .

history

lighthouse

The landmark of the place is the 36 meter high lighthouse built in 1817/1818 , the oldest and northernmost in Croatia. The beacon that warns of Cape Savudrija and the offshore shallows and cliffs is still in operation, but the lighthouse itself is rented out as a holiday apartment. The development of Savudrija as a seaside resort began with the establishment of a sanatorium and bathing establishment of the St. Anna Children's Hospital in Graz , which was initially only available to the patients of this hospital for healing and convalescence, but was very soon also opened to sick children from other hospitals in Austria.

As archaeological finds show, the area around Savudrija has been inhabited since the Neolithic at the latest ; this settlement continuity is unlikely to have been disrupted over a long period of time. In Roman times, Savudrija was a port; Remnants of port facilities have been preserved. There are some remarkable Roman sites in the area around Savudrija. Particularly noteworthy are those of a Roman fort on the peninsula, or the temporary island of Sipar .

From the Migration Period and the Early Middle Ages, Savudrija essentially shares the historical fate of the rest of northern Istria.

landscape

A special attraction of Savudrija is the lush Mediterranean vegetation as well as the partially closed forests and groves, mostly composed of pine trees and various types of oak.

tourism

Today Savudrija is a much-visited, but compared to other tourist places in Istria, a rather tranquil holiday destination, which can offer the most essential tourist facilities. There are few hotels, but some restaurants.

Savudrija's beaches are mostly stone beaches. But there are also small pebble beaches. The camping site on the coast served in the 1990s during the Bosnian War as a refugee camp for several thousand refugees from the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina , who initially lived in large tents and later in more isolated family accommodation.
