Alexander Beatson (born October 24, 1759 Dundee , † October 15, 1830 Sussex ) was a Scottish-British general and farmer .

Beatson took part in Wellington's war against the Tippoo Sahib in India as an adjutant in 1799 and then wrote A view of the origin and conduct of the war against Tippoo Sultann (London 1800). Beatson was governor of St. Helena between 1808 and 1813 , after which he returned to England and was appointed lieutenant general. Beatson returned to his country estate Knole-Farm in Sussex , where he took care of the farming .

He wrote several books on agricultural methods, such as A new system cultivation without lime or dung or summer-fallows (London 1820). This system consisted in the fact that the heavy clay soil in the county of Sussex was initially no longer cultivated with plowing , fertilization and fallow farming, but only worked with a special harrow constructed by Beatson himself and instead of fallow and fertilization a rational crop rotation with simultaneous burning of the soil was introduced. Beatson achieved great success with this system on his farm, but these were not sustainable, as Justus von Liebig was able to demonstrate, but only served a short-term physical improvement of the soil.
