Refosco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Refosco is an old, down-to-earth red wine variety that is mainly grown in the Italian province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and in Istria . There are different varieties of the vine .

The Mondeuse grape variety from Savoy may be identical to this vine. This is at least denied by the ampelographer Pierre Galet .

The grapevine can deliver outstanding wines of intense color and great expressiveness, but the quality of the table wines is often only mediocre. Ideally, the wines undergo malolactic fermentation in order to reduce the pronounced acidity of the wine. The best wines from this vine are pressed in the Colli Orientali del Friuli as well as in the Slovenian Karst and on Terra Rossa soils in Istria.

Also in California (→ viticulture in California ) and Australia (→ viticulture in Australia ) some wineries are planted with vines from this family of vines.

Varieties

Terrano

The Terrano variant is predominant in Slovenia and Croatia and, in addition to Terrano, is also marketed as Teran or Refošk .

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

The red-stemmed Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is considered the best variety. It is mainly grown in Friuli.
