[description
The island is privately owned by Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF), the youth organization of the social democratic workers' party in Norway, which holds a summer camp there every year . The island is also operated commercially by Utøya AS for external excursions and leisure activities. The AUF received the island as a gift from the Oslo and Akershus Trade Confederation on August 28, 1950.
The island is mainly forested and has a few clearings and a bay in the southeast. There is a small pier on the east bank of the island, which is used by a ferry to dock on the island. There are also several permanent buildings on the island. Close to the dock are the Hovedhuset ("main house"), the Stabburet ("grocery store") and the Låven ("barn"). The Kafébygget ("cafeteria"), the largest building on the island, which houses a cafeteria , a kiosk and a meeting room , is located directly at the campsite, which is located on the highest area on the island . The sanitary facilities are also located there in a small building. In the southern part of the island there is still the Skolestua (school building).
etymology
The first syllable "ut" means "outside" or "outside"; the second syllable is the definite form of the Norwegian word for "island", "øy". "Utøya" means something like "the outer island" (of the Tyrifjord).
Assassination 2011
On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik carried out an attack on the summer camp of the AUF, which was attended by around 560 young people. After the bombs were detonated in Oslo, he entered the island in the early evening - disguised as a police officer - under the pretext of informing the campers about the bombing in Oslo and protecting them. He started shooting at the young people at random until about an hour and a half later he was arrested by the police without resistance. 69 people died in the attack.
