The Tyrifjord (138.56 km²) is the fifth largest, in terms of water volume even third largest inland lake in Norway and is located in the municipalities of Hole , Lier , Modum and Ringerike (all in Fylke Viken ). The Tyrifjord is one of the most biodiverse lakes in Norway and there are good fishing opportunities for trout , pike and crabs .
The lake is located south of the town of Hønefoss and has four main arms: Nordfjord (north-west), Steinsfjord (north-east, with numerous islands), Holsfjord (south-east) and Storfjord (south-west), which is connected to the neighboring lake Bergsjø south of Vikersund . The Tyrifjord reaches its greatest depth of 330 meters in the Holsfjord. Near the entrance to the Holsfjord is the small island of Utøya , which was the scene of a mass murder on July 22, 2011 .
