Ronald Bye (born November 23, 1937 in Oslo ; † September 24, 2018 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap), trade unionist and author . He was his country's transport minister from 1979 to 1981 .

Life

Bye attended vocational school until 1955 and trained as a machine repairman until 1958. He worked in this profession until 1960. Then he was elected secretary of the youth organization Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) until 1963 . He then worked for the Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO) union federation until 1969 . In 1969 he took over the post of General Secretary of the Ap and held this office until 1975; then he worked as head of administration in the tourism industry.

On October 8, 1979, he was appointed Minister of Transport in the Nordli government. He kept the post until the end of the subsequent Brundtland I government , which resigned on October 14, 1981. He then returned to the tourism industry and was a member of the board of the Norwegian travel agency association between 1982 and 1983. In 1988 he founded his own consulting firm Ronald Bye Consulting , for which he worked until 2001.

Author and investigator

After his time in politics, he began working as a writer and published several books until 2014. In many books he described the internal structure of the labor movement and the illegal surveillance of the Norwegian left. In the book Niende etasje ( German : Ninth Floor ), for example, he described a monitoring center that was set up on the ninth floor of the Folkets Hus in Oslo. Most of the other books were about illegal surveillance and wiretapping of political opponents. Bye also stated that he was involved in these actions himself.

His revelations ended in the fact that the Norwegian parliament Storting convened a special commission to investigate the allegations more closely. This commission, headed by Ketil Lund , came to the conclusion in 1996 that this surveillance was actually taking place and that it was mainly leftists who were affected.
