Stella Nyambura Mwangi (born September 1, 1986 in Nairobi , Kenya ), also known as STL , is a Norwegian hip-hopper and singer of Kenyan descent who was chosen to represent Norway at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest .

Career

When she was five years old, her family moved from Kenya to Norway . At the age of eleven she was already active in the Norwegian hip-hop scene and at twelve she was a member of the African youth group “The Rise”, which released the album Maroon . They also appeared in the support act of well-known international musicians at performances in Norway.

From 2005 she worked with African musicians. On the debut album of the Senegalese hip-hop group "Wagable" she was involved in two national hits. As "STL" she made recordings with artists from her home country Kenya and at the Kenyan Kisima Awards . In 2006 she was awarded the Newcomer Prize. Four of her songs have also been included in the soundtracks of films and television series in the United States .

At the beginning of 2011 she took part in the Norwegian preliminary round of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest , the Melodi Grand Prix , with the English - Swahili-language title Haba haba , which she wrote herself in 2010 . She won the third semifinal and her song rose to number one on the Norwegian charts within two weeks . On February 12, she was elected to represent Norway in the final of the Melodi Grand Prix 2011. In the run-up to the competition, she was one of the favorites to win. However, she could not live up to this role - in the first semifinals of the Song Contest, which took place on May 10, 2011, she was surprisingly eliminated. For the first time since 2007, Norway was not represented in the final.

Although a few singles were released in the following years, Mwangi has not yet been able to build on the great success of Haba haba in Norway .

In 2012, the singer suffered a severe blow of fate when her father was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
