Peter Schmitz (politician)

Peter Schmitz (born March 8, 1955 in Gevenich , Eifel ) is a German politician ( FDP ). He was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament from 2001 to 2011 .

Life

From 1965 to 1973 Schmitz attended the humanistic Regino high school and episcopal Konvikt in Prüm . He did his military service from 1973 to 1975. He then studied dentistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz until 1980 . The doctorate to Dr. med. dent. took place in 1982. Since 1983 he has been working as a resident dentist. His first wife died of a serious illness. He is married to the ZDF presenter Gundula Gause , with whom he has two children. He has another child from his first marriage.

Schmitz has been a member of the FDP since 1989. He took over the chairmanship of the Mainz FDP in 1998 and moved into the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament for the Liberals in 2001. There he was deputy parliamentary group leader and spokesman for social, health and media policy. He also headed the State Committee for Society and Social Policy of the FDP Rhineland-Palatinate. In the 2011 state elections , he ran for the Mainz II constituency as a direct candidate; he was not re-elected via the state list either, because the FDP missed re-entry into the state parliament.
