Carlos Botelho

Carlos Botelho (born September 18, 1899 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † August 18, 1982 ibid) was a Portuguese painter . He was one of the most important Portuguese painters of his time.

Life

Carlos Botelho was born in Lisbon in 1899. Gifted, since he played the violin and had a talent for drawing, he began his artistic studies in 1929 at free academies in Paris . He then traveled to various European countries and the USA .

In 1938 he received the highest art prize in Portugal, the Premio Souza-Cardoso .

Botelho was an extremely versatile man. So he worked as a carpet and tile artist, set designer , decorator , draftsman and caricaturist .

In 1932 he had his first solo exhibition in Lisbon. Since 1930 he lived regularly in Lisbon's district, the Mouraria .

The main theme of his work was Lisbon in various forms. The painter died on August 18, 1982 in his hometown.
