Mário Alberto Barroso Garcia da Silva (born August 15, 1947 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese cameraman and director .

Life

After dropping out of his law studies at the University of Lisbon and stopping off at the Institut National Supérieur des Arts du spectacle et des techniques de diffusion (INSAS) in Brussels , he went to the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris , where he graduated as a director (1973) and camera (1976) made. In addition to making several short films on his own, from then on he mainly worked as a cameraman for French television productions. In the 1990s in particular, he was responsible for the camera for numerous television productions in France, for example for various episodes for Franck Apprederis ' television series Passeur d'Enfants , the numerous television films by Michaëla Watteaux and Henri Hellmann , or for the television series Joséphine, which has been running since 1997 gardien , u. a.

With his television film Aniversário , for the Portuguese television channel SIC , he directed a full-length feature film for the first time in 2000. This was followed by O Milagre segundo Salomé , a film based on José Rodrigues Miguéis ' polemical novel, which alludes to the apparition of Fátima , and which became a hit with the public (still among the most successful Portuguese films since 2004). For his film Um Amor der Perdição he won the Globo de Ouro 2008 together with producer Paulo Branco . The film was nominated for a Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival that same year .

In Portuguese film , too, Barroso has so far been primarily a cameraman, and only secondly a director. He was responsible for the photography of films by award-winning directors such as Manoel de Oliveira and João César Monteiro. Here he stood out particularly because of his adaptability to the ideas of the various directors. However, he does not see himself as an actor: he embodied Camilo Castelo Branco twice for Manoel de Oliveira ( Francisca 1981, and Tag der Despair 1992), otherwise he only appears as an actor occasionally and in supporting roles.
