action

Part 1 (ZDF: December 4, 1983)

The plan to build a large shipping canal between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea had existed for a long time. But a man with the energy of Ferdinand de Lesseps had to come first to implement it. The television film began in 1832, 27 years before construction began: the young diplomat Lesseps was appointed Vice-Consul of France in Alexandria. Equally important for his canal project is that he becomes the tutor of the viceroy's favorite son, because the boy is his sponsor.

At the foot of the pyramids Lesseps gets to know and love a tourist - Agathe Delamalle. She later becomes his wife.

Part 2 (ZDF: December 6, 1983)

Napoleon III proclaimed himself emperor in 1852. Out of indignation, Ferdinand de Lesseps quits the diplomatic service. As a horse breeder, he retires to the country. The sudden death of his wife awakens the old thirst for action in him. The accession to the throne of his pupil Prince Said is a welcome occasion for him to return to Cairo. Said also gives his former tutor permission to build the canal. But the English fear for their power in the Middle East and use all their influence against the plan of the building.

Part 3 (ZDF: December 11, 1983)

Viceroy Said feels betrayed by Ferdinand de Lesseps and imprisons him. But soon he remorsefully releases him. Even more: Lesseps finally gets the approval to build the canal. Funding is the biggest problem. But then the Frenchman has a brilliant idea: He has Suez shares issued. The result exceeds all expectations. 200 million gold francs are collected in a few days. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in April 1859.

The Fellach families are so poor that even girls want to work on the canal. Lesseps takes the young Safi into his house as a maid.

With the most primitive means and a large number of workers, the excavations for the canal between the Red and the Mediterranean begin.

Part 4 (ZDF: December 13, 1983)

The setbacks and intrigues during the construction of the canal are endless: Viceroy Said, Lessep's great patron, dies. He warns of his successor before his death. With every right! A law will soon be passed prohibiting the employment of fellahs in the construction of canals.

In addition, rumors are being launched that discredit Lesseps and his society economically.

The stock market panics. Lesseps faces ruin. He goes to Paris and asks his cousin, the Empress, for help.
