Michael Strogoff is a ZDF adventure four-parter by Robert Brandau ( Walter Ulbrich ) and Claude Desailly from 1975 based on the novel Der Kurier des Zaren by Jules Verne with Raimund Harmstorf in the leading role.

Part 1: (ZDF: December 28, 1976)

In Russia in 1875 things are fermenting. While Saint Petersburg celebrates festivals, in Siberia the Tatars rebel against the tsarist rule. The telecommunications connection to Moscow is interrupted. In this explosive situation, Captain Michael Strogoff, as the tsar's courier, is supposed to make his way 6,000 km to Irkutsk and deliver secret instructions to the governor, a brother of the tsar. Strogoff travels under a false name. On the way he gets to know his fellow traveler Nadia, wins her trust and uses her ignorance to camouflage her by pretending to be his wife. Together they reach the Urals. At the same time, the Tatar tribal leader and ex-officer Ogareff managed to escape from the dungeon.

Part 2: (ZDF: January 1st, 1977)

In Siberia, Strogoff is in great danger. His companion Nadia is kidnapped by the rebel leader Ogareff and his gypsy friend Sangarre. She should reveal the courier's hiding place. Strogoff himself barely escapes his life after a Tatar attack. After arriving in his hometown of Omsk, he meets his mother, but does not return her greeting in order not to arouse suspicion. While his girlfriend and mother are being interrogated in a penal camp, he is able to flee the city.

Part 3: (ZDF: January 4th, 1977)

Recaptured, Strogoff is tortured on his mother and forced to indirectly admit that he is the tsar's courier. Ogareff removes his seal so that he can act as a courier in Irkutsk and give the governor false instructions in his favor. Meanwhile, he leaves Strogoff to his accomplice Feofar Khan, the leader of the Tatars. This blinds Strogoff . Shortly afterwards, with Nadia's help, Strogoff escapes during a firefight.

Part 4: (ZDF: January 6, 1977)

In Irkutsk those trapped are waiting to be appalled. Instead, Ogareff arrives in the city and directs the Tatars' attacks from within: with the tsar's seal that he has taken from Strogoff, he identifies himself as a secret courier and wins the governor's trust. Nadia and the blinded Strogoff, constantly on the run from their pursuers, make a last desperate attempt to advance to Irkutsk: right through the enemy lines, they want to be drifted on a raft up the Angara to the threatened city. After tactical maneuvers by the Tatars, Strogoff regains his vision in a conflagration, which promptly prompts him to take part in the fight. He tracks down Ogareff and kills him, to Sangarre's chagrin.

German version without end

After the 4th part was broadcast, the German television audience reacted quite angrily, as they saw the happy ending cheated. The German version ended after the fighting in Irkutsk. In reality, however, the film continued for several minutes with scenes in St. Petersburg . Above all, it showed the happy ending between Michael and Nadia at a tsar's ball . The audience noticed that the cover of the record with the film music showed the happy couple in a dance scene that was not shown in the film. The ZDF said, analogously to the cut, that such an operetta ending would not fit this film. Elsewhere the opinion was different; so you could z. B. see the unabridged version in France or the Netherlands.

  • Raimund Harmstorf never allowed himself to be doubled in spite of the daring battles he had to endure as " The Tsar's Courier " . According to the recordings, which mostly took place in Hungary , evidence of this was , among other things, hands scarred by sword blows, an injury to the Achilles tendon and a fracture of the shoulder.
