The story of Don Quixote von der Mancha is a four-part television film from 1965, which was made as a German-French co-production under the direction of producer Walter Ulbrich and Henry Deutschmeister . The film is the second in the series of 16 ZDF four-part Advent films that were made between 1964 and 1983, and the last to be shot in black and white. The story of Don Quixote de la Mancha is told on the basis of the world-famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes .

action

Confused by the stories of knights and their glorious deeds, Don Alonso as Don Quixote de la Mancha and his friend and loyal squire Sancho Panza fearlessly set out as a traveling knight to achieve great things. With rickety armor and a barber's bowl as a helmet, he fights windmills, thinks laundresses are princesses and monks are evil magicians. While Don Quixote dedicates all his deeds and all the glory to his lady of the heart, the most beautiful virgin Dulcinea , he contributes to the amusement of all concerned.

Reviews

This mammoth film adaptation became denser and denser, gained pace and made visible some of the tragic grotesque power of the novel. ( Televisor 1965)

Others

  • The audience ratings in Germany were 27 percent for the first part and 15 percent for each of the other parts, far below the audience participation of the other Advent four-parters.
  • A slightly modified production in 13 parts of 26 minutes each was created for France under different management.
  • At the time, it was primarily Josef Meinrad's synchronization that aroused criticism , as it meant that his voice, which is known to be distinctive, could not be heard. Meinrad was dubbed by Robert Graf , Roger Carel by Klaus Havenstein .
  • The well-known Spanish actor Fernando Rey was involved in several Don Quixote films (including in this production as Herzog, in 1947 as Samson Carrasco and in 1991 as Don Quixote himself).
  • After the last television broadcast in 1976 there was little hope of a re-release for a long time, as the stored film material was badly damaged over time and restoration seemed too costly. After all, a reprocessing was started for the DVD release.
