Henri Deutschmeister

Henri Deutschmeister , rare Henry Deutschmeister (born May 21, 1902 as Heinrich Fritz Deutschmeister in Brăila , Romania , † February 20, 1969 in Paris ) was a French film producer and film exporter.

Life

Deutschmeister came to France at a young age and initially worked in film export. In the mid-1930s he began making films for the first time with his own small production company, Franco-London. The outbreak of the Second World War prevented this activity from continuing, and the Jew Deutschmeister had to go into hiding.

Henri Deutschmeister was only able to resume his work as a producer after the war ended in 1945. With the re-founded Franco-London, he became one of the most commercially successful producers of his time, "who had an unmistakable nose for trends and box office hits". Deutschmeister signed almost all the stars of French entertainment films of the 50s and early 60s, including Jean Gabin , Brigitte Bardot , Gérard Philipe , Louis de Funès and Bourvil . In most of his productions, he only focused on the pure entertainment aspect and showed little interest in artistically ambitious productions. Exceptions are René Clair 's version of Faust, The Pact with the Devil and André Cayatte's advertising film for Franco-German international understanding, Beyond the Rhine .

In 1962, Henri Deutschmeister sat on the jury of the Cannes International Film Festival . In the last years of his life he regularly cooperated with the German Walter Ulbrich in the production of the popular ZDF Christmas four-part series , including most recently Die Schatzinsel , Tom Sawyers and Huckleberry Finns Abenteuer and Die Lederstockferzählungen . Deutschmeister died a little later.
