Hans Matheis (born June 24, 1934 in Trasham ; † September 15, 2006 in Oberpolling ) was a folk musician on the Styrian harmonica and the composer of more than 120 pieces of folk music.

Life

Hans Matheis, who comes from the Lower Bavarian district of Passau , received his first harmonica at the age of seven; his father recognized his son's musical talent early on. He remained self-taught throughout his life and never learned to read music .

In the 1960s and 1970s he performed as an accordionist and Hammond organ player with several dance bands known in the Passau area, such as La Plata, Picaderos or Ohio Five .

Around 35 years old he turned to folk music and played the Styrian harmonica with the Oberpollinger Stub'nmusi, the Fürstenstoana Trio with Irmi, the Ilzleit'n-Stub'nmusi and the Matheis-Musi . With Häuslmo-Musi, founded in 1980 (line-up: Hans Matheis, Steirische Harmonika; Jutta Gerg, dulcimer ; Alfons Riesinger, double bass ; Harti Pilsner, from 1989 Michael Schneider, from 1997 Kaspar Gerg, guitar ) he played until his death For a quarter of a century and won the Zwieseler Fink Wanderpreis in 1984 and 2001 and the Gotteszeller Folk Music Prize in 2001 .

Of the well over a hundred compositions, only a few were published during his lifetime. In 1985 the music cassette Häuslmo-Musi Vilshofen - Finkengewinner 1984 - Vilshof'ner Dreig'sang came out with eight of his pieces, in 1987 the music cassette Fürstenstoana Trio with Irmi sings und spuit auf with six other pieces. In 1999, together with Ralf Willing , he recorded two of his pieces on the CD Startrompeter Ralf Willing and his Multi Sound Orchester-Instrumental und Gesang and three pieces on the CD Volksmusik aus dem Landkreis Passau (2000) with Häuslmo-Musi . In 2002 he released four solo pieces on the CD OASA - Folk and Country Music . In 2006, Bayerischer Rundfunk recorded four pieces with Häuslmo-Musi . From 2008 to 2011, one hundred pieces he played himself were published from the estate. In 2013 the Vorderwald Trio recorded eighteen previously unreleased pieces.

Since 2014, the Bavarian Forest community of Fürstenstein has been organizing “Hans Matheis Volksmusiktage” every two years with its own competition for young people who play music.

Music and effect

As a folk musician, Hans Matheis played at traditional festivals, church celebrations and private occasions, performed as a soloist , with various groups and also as an accompanist to vocal pieces. Polkas, waltzes, marches, landlords and worn Boarians form the core of his compositions, which he dedicated to people, an extinct craft or his home town of Fürstenstein - such as the “Pollinger March” or the “Castle Waltz”. His traditionally three-part pieces are firmly anchored in the harmonic framework of the 1st, 4th and 5th stages; the melody and harmony develop from the major triad . Precise play, which he also attached great importance to as a teacher, and sharply pointed rhythm fill marches and polkas with pulsating energy and intensity. Softly flowing melodies with variable articulation and fine dynamics are the hallmarks of Länders and Waltz. Franz-Xaver Lechner compares the inventiveness and expressiveness of Hans Matheis with Astor Piazzolla in Tango Nuevo and André Verchuren in Musette . Numerous pieces by Hans Matheis belong to the repertoire of folk musicians, so the Kellberger Trachtlermusi from Thyrnau won the folk music award Zwieseler Jugendfink 2012 with the “Radiputzer” and “Häuslmo-Marsch” .
