The Biography Channel (spelling THE BIOGRAPHY CHANNEL ) was a digital pay TV channel that was on air in Germany from March 31, 2007 to September 22, 2014. BIO's program mainly consisted of biographical portraits of important personalities such as actors, musicians, artists, authors, athletes, business figures and politicians. In addition to biographies, The Biography Channel also showed real-life and lifestyle series. The program was made up of individual programs, series and series, which were thematically arranged.

The Biography Channel received its broadcasting license from the Lower Saxony State Media Authority (NLM) , Hanover. A + E Networks (formerly AETN International) and NBC Global Networks Germany were the shareholders of the digital special interest channel as a joint venture. The Biography Channel traded under the name The History Channel (Germany) GmbH & Co. KG, which operates the sister station History . The Biography Channel reached over 79 million households in 23 countries worldwide and has been translated into 11 languages.

On September 22, 2014, the German version of the station was replaced by A&E Germany .

Program offer

The program was put together entirely by The Biography Channel Germany and consisted of productions from A + E Networks, programs from the German production partner ZDF and other suppliers. The Biography Channel's annually updated and expanded catalog comprised over 1,400 hours of programming. The program consisted of fixed slots, weekly thematic programming and series that were programmed in thematically arranged categories under fixed rubric titles.

bio.special

bio.special presented particularly detailed biographical portraits. The two-hour programs presented the lives of outstanding personalities and highlighted the rather unknown traits in the nature of actors, musicians and other people in public life. Bio.special also stood out for its series of programs on special topics.

bio.fashion

"Bio.fashion" was all about fashion and design. BIO looked at series like "Project Runway - Designer Wanted!" and thus offered a glimpse behind the scenes of the fashion world, into the lives of designers and models. The format also showed the latest outfits from the catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York.

bio.extra

bio.extra dealt with the lives of prominent people from various fields, such as the top athletes Tiger Woods and Mike Tyson, the magicians David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy, artists like Andy Warhol or the creative minds of the fashion label Versace.

bio.rocks

bio.rocks showed the life of music stars on and backstage, for example Tom Jones, Tommy Lee, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash, Puff Daddy, Shania Twain. In special television music shows, artists themselves guided through the program. This program section was rounded off with concerts by Kylie Minogue or Coldplay and documentation on famous music albums such as "The Joshua Tree" by U2 or "Nevermind" by Nirvana.

power & money

The Biography Channel presented the families Rockefellers, Hilton and Trump, the inventors of Google and the lives of many other wealthy people under the heading “macht & geld”.

stars & asterisks

BIO showed the private world of stars and starlets such as Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen, Ben Stiller, Winona Ryder, Christopher Reeve or Sean Connery.

famous & notorious

Notorious criminals such as Jack Ruby, who shot the alleged Kennedy killer, or OJ Simpson, who was not only known as a football star, are presented in this program area. Her life story was reconstructed and the crimes presented.

reallife.series

The real-life series "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels - Papa Was A Kiss" accompanies the KISS bassist Gene Simmons in his initially seemingly inappropriate role as a family man. The real-life format "Inked - Under the Skin" provided insights into a tattoo studio and its visitors.

The eleventh day

The program told the story of the assassination attempt at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 for the first time from a new, previously unknown perspective. BIO shed light on the history of those Israeli athletes who were there at the time and only narrowly escaped the attackers. 40 years later, the survivors returned to Munich and reported in the world premiere of the documentary "The Eleventh Day - The Survivors of Munich 1972" from a perspective that had previously hardly been noticed.

I survived! German fates

In the BIO successful series “I survived! German fates ”told people about their personal fates and how they experienced and survived the day when they faced death completely unexpectedly.

Original tones

In the series of interviews, Original Tones, newcomers and legends were introduced in interviews and interpreted one of their songs live.

Reception possibilities

The Biography Channel was distributed via cable and satellite as well as IP and mobile TV in the entire German-speaking area. A selection of the programs was available as video on demand.

Swiss and Austria

In Switzerland, the German-language program of The Biography Channel was distributed via Cablecom and Swisscable and in Austria via Sky, UPC Telekabel, Liwest, Telesystem Tirol and aonDigital TV (Telekom Austria). The station could also be received in Austria as mobile TV on the mobile phone via Hutchison 3G Austria.

The Biography Channel as a global brand

A + E Networks is building partnerships with other TV networks around the world to launch new channels or branded program windows in new areas. All programs of the partner companies of The Biography Channel are unique and are directed and put together on site by local management. The partner companies run both the programs in The Biography Channel's catalog and local productions.

United States

The station started on January 1, 1999. On July 7, 2014, it was replaced by FYI .

Great Britain

The British branch started in October 2000. On November 4, 2013, it was replaced by Lifetime .

Asia

An offshoot for Asia started on May 27, 2008. It is to be replaced by FYI in October 2014 .

Canada

The station started on September 7, 2001. At the same time, a Canadian version of FYI started on September 1, 2014 , which replaced TwistTV.

The German-language Biography Channel received an award in the Documentation category as part of the Hot Bird TV Awards 2008. In 2013 the station also won the Mira Award given by SKY in the category “Best local in-house production” for the documentary “The Eleventh Day - The Survivors of Munich 1972”
