Fernando Pessoa wrote a travel guide in English in 1925. In it he describes worthy sights of Lisbon and provides information about their backgrounds.

The film shows the changed, but also the astonishing number of unchanged sights from the book from 1925 in Lisbon from 2009. The speaker reads the corresponding description from the original book, without further comments or changes.

Production and reception

The unpublished book from 1925 was only discovered in 1988. Director Fonseca e Costa, a filmmaker from Novo Cinemas , filmed the sights described at that time in 2009 in what is now Lisbon.

The renowned cameraman Acácio de Almeida was responsible for the calm, opulent images, mostly aerial shots.

In addition to compositions by Joly Braga Santos , a specially composed Fado by fado singer Duarte can be heard as film music , a setting of a poem by Teresa Font . The piece can also be heard in the film in an instrumental jazz arrangement by Laurent Filipe .

The film premiered on August 1, 2009 in Lisbon. In addition to the Portuguese language version with narrator Paulo Pires , an English version by Peter Coyote was also recorded . In addition, five other language versions were published, in addition to French, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese as well as German, spoken by Guilherme Dutschke , librarian at the Goethe Institute in Lisbon and literary translator .

The film was released on DVD in October 2010, in an elaborate edition with a trilingual booklet and a map of Lisbon with the sights mentioned. A banderole with the national coat of arms confirms the support of the President of Portugal .
