Anna Maria Kinberg Batra , née Kinberg (born April 14, 1970 in Skärholmen ), is a Swedish politician . From January 10, 2015, she was chairwoman of the Moderata samlingspartiet and the first woman in this position. On August 25, 2017, she announced her resignation from this position.

Anna Kinberg Batra was born in Skärholmen. When she was four years old, she moved to Rotterdam with her family ; her father worked at Merrill Lynch in Amsterdam . In 1980 the family moved back to Sweden and settled in Djursholm . After graduating from high school, Kinberg Batra studied French, Dutch and political science. In 2000 she graduated from Stockholm Business School. Anna Kinberg Batra is married to comedian David Batra . They have a daughter together.

Political career

In 1983 Kinberg Batra became a member of the Moderate Youth Association ( Moderata ungdomsförbundet , MUF), the youth organization of the Moderata samlingspartiet . In the early 1990s she was one of the liberal-minded members of this organization, which at that time was headed by Ulf Kristersson .

Kinberg Batra worked in the Swedish state administration in 1993 when her party colleague Carl Bildt was Prime Minister. In 1994 and 1996 she worked as an editorial writer for the national newspaper Svenska Dagbladet . From 1995 to 1996 she was political secretary for the moderates in the European Parliament . In the following years she worked as an entrepreneur in the field of political and economic communication until 2005. In 2005/2006 she was Head of Information at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

In 1994 she was elected to the provincial parliament ( landstingsfullmäktige ) of Stockholms län and also belonged to the provincial government ( länsstyrelse ). In the 1998 election to the Swedish Parliament , she was elected as a substitute candidate and was able to move up as a member of parliament in 2000. In the election to the Swedish Parliament in 2002 , she lost her mandate again. From the election to the Swedish Riksdag in 2006 , she was a member of parliament for three electoral terms, and from 2010 as leader of the moderates group.

When Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt resigned as party chairman after the lost Reichstag election in 2014 , Kinberg Batra initially took over his duties on a provisional basis. At a special party conference on January 10, 2015, she was elected party leader. Jessica Polfjärd took over the post of group leader .

On August 25, 2017, she announced her resignation as party leader of the Moderata samlingspartiet after the party’s criticism increased and more and more party districts withdrew their trust. On October 1, 2017, Ulf Kristersson was elected as her successor. With the regular election of the Reichstag in 2018, she left parliament. Among other things, she works as an external consultant for the Stockholm School of Commerce.
