The Secrets of Lisbon is a Portuguese - French feature film from the Chilean director Raúl Ruiz from 2010 . A six-part television series was also produced from it.

The film is based on the story of the same name by the Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco (1825–1890).

The orphan boy Pedro lived in a joyless Catholic boarding school in Lisbon at the beginning of the 19th century . He doesn't know anything about his origins and doesn't even have a surname. One day, boarding school director Father Dinis confesses to him that his mother is alive and that the Countess (Portuguese: Condessa) is Angela de Lima. In search of his roots, Pedro gets into the family entanglements of his oppressed mother and thus into the scheming world of the nobles and aristocrats .

The European auteur film was shot between October 2009 and January 2010 in Óbidos , in the Sintra district and other locations around the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . The production cost was about $ 2.5 million. In the US alone, the film grossed over a million dollars at the box office.

It then appeared as a six-part television series, now also in German-language synchronization by the station Arte .
