René Lefebvre

René Leopold Henri Lefebvre (* 8. August 1893 in Tournai , Hainaut , Belgium ; † 26. March 1976 in Tournai-Lamain, Hainaut) was a Belgian politician of the Liberal Party .

biography

Lefebvre worked as an agricultural engineer after studying . Initially, he worked in local politics and was mayor of Tournai from 1921 until his death . In 1935 he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and represented the Arrondissement of Tournai there until 1965 .

In February 1945 Prime Minister Achille Van Acker appointed him to a government for the first time as Minister of Agriculture and held this position until March 1946. After the transitional government of Prime Minister Paul-Henri Spaak , Van Acker reappointed him as Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet at the end of March 1946. He also held the post of Minister of Agriculture in the subsequent government of Camille Huysmans until March 1947.

Between 1948 and 1958 he was a member of the Centrum Harmel named after Pierre Harmel , which dealt with the study and development of demography , economy , ethics and culture as well as political, legal and administrative organization in Belgium and was composed of 18 parliamentarians and 24 non-parliamentarians. The center's final report was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies on April 25, 1958.

In April 1954 he was reappointed Minister of Agriculture by Prime Minister Van Acker and held this post until the end of Van Acker's term in June 1958.

Van Acker's successor Gaston Eyskens appointed him on June 26, 1958 as Minister of the Interior in his cabinet, to which he was a member until the end of Eysken's term on April 25, 1961. During this time he was the last deputy prime minister from 1960 to 1961.

René Lefebvre was honored with the honorary title of Minister of State on July 12, 1966 for his political merits .
