Martin II of Polheim

Martin II von Polheim (* around 1450 in Lichtenegg in the Hausruckviertel ; † June 2, 1498 in Steyr ) was councilor to Emperor Maximilian I.

Life

Martin and his cousin Wolfgang von Polheim grew up together with the son of the Roman-German Emperor Friedrich III. on. In 1477 both went to the Burgundian Netherlands with Maximilian . During the Battle of Guinegate (1479) , Martin von Pohlheim was briefly captured by the French.

In May 1481 Martin von Pohlheim was accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece . During the War of the Burgundian Succession (1477–1493) , Martin von Pohlheim, his cousin Wolfgang and Maximilian were captured in Bruges in 1488 . Thereafter Maximilian and the Pohlheims were brought to Ghent and only released from captivity after Maximilian's father arrived in Flanders (1490).

After the death of his father, Maximilian became the ruling Roman-German king as "Maximilian I" and transferred the Burgraviate of Steyr to Martin von Polheim for life ; In 1498 he bought Litzlberg Castle . He was the imperial secret councilor and chamberlain of Maximilian I and died on June 2, 1498 in Steyr . He was buried in the former Minorite monastery in Wels .

family

Martin von Polheim came from the Upper Austrian Polheim family (Wels line) . His parents were Reinprecht III. von Polheim († May 29, 1466), 1439–1449 administrator of the Hauptmannschaft ob der Enns , and Elisabeth von Starhemberg († September 10, 1482). He married

  • 1480 Maria von Borsselen , mistress of Baarland , daughter of the fleece knight Wolfhart VI. von Borsselen , Marshal of France
  • 1493 Regina of Liechtenstein († 1496). Children from this marriage were:
    • Sigmund Ludwig von Polheim (* 1494 in Innsbruck, † June 14, 1544 in Wildbad Gastein); Mr. zu Polheim in Wels and Steinhaus (⚭ February 5, 1521 Bockfließ Castle, Lower Austria) Anna von Eckartsau († February 7, 1535 Wels).
