Litzlberg Castle

The Litzlberg castle is located on a small island in Lake Attersee in the eponymous town Litzlberg in the market town Seewalchen in District Vöcklabruck of Upper Austria .

history

The name was originally Lützelburg and meant small castle (for lützel see English little = small).

Litzlberg was originally a Mondsee fief . Around 1313 it came to Winter von Windern (Windner von Slematig). Another mention of Litzelberg took place in 1498, at that time the owner Preunhuber sold the castle to Martin II. Of Polheim . In 1603 Weikart von Polheim sold it to Sigmund Engl von Wagrain . In 1655 Litzberg came to Johann von Khunitz, who captured the landscape of the river Enns . From this it went to the imperial forester Johann Christoph Staindl von Plötzened. In 1664 Elias von Seeau bought the castle on the 6000 m² island from him. Around 1769 Litzlberg passed to Count Johann Gottlieb von Clam . In 1802 Litzlberg came to the court attorney Dr. Josef Preuer, then to Josef Weichs (1814).

Litzlberg Castle today

Litzlberg Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674 with a row of stakes still protruding over the water as a fence

As can be seen in the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674, Litzlberg was a stately complex with a square tower, at the corners of which were guard towers. There was also a round tower with an onion roof. A wooden bridge led to the castle, and a palisade fence erected in the lake also protected the castle. In 1780 the already ruinous masonry of the castle was removed down to a corner tower and the material was used to rebuild the burned down market in Schörfling .

The new building in the style of historicism dates from the period after 1896. The Viennese banker von Springer built the new country estate here. The new jetty to the island was built in 1917. Gustav Klimt spent several summers here and painted a number of Attersee pictures.

With regard to the new building, there were several changes of ownership, including: Baron E. von Springer (1895–1897), the steel industrialist Böhler and his descendants. The (vulgo :) Böhlerinsel was acquired in 1974 by the Linz brick manufacturer Karl Leitl († 1982). The island and castle are still privately owned by the Leitl family and are not open to the public. Today the castle is completely renovated and is a gem in the Attersee.
