Christoph Leitl (2016)

Christoph Leitl (born March 29, 1949 in Linz , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and politician ( ÖVP ). From 2000 to 2018 he was President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO).

Christoph Leitl studied social and economic sciences at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . In 1973 he was promoted to Dr. rer. soc. oec. PhD . Leitl is an honorary member of the K.Ö.St.V. Kürnberg to Vienna in the ÖCV and the K.Ö.St.V. Mercuria Eferding in the MKV .

From 1977 to 1990 he was managing director of the Bauhütte Leitl-Werke Ges.mbH company in Eferding , which his father Karl Leitl had built up after the war.

On the night of September 13-14, 1979, Leitl narrowly escaped an attempted kidnapping. The kidnappers were arrested two years later. It later emerged that the kidnapping of the Leitl children was also planned. However, an accomplice had thwarted this plan because he did not want to kidnap a child. As a thank you, Leitl visited the man several times in prison and then got him a job as an electrician in the family business. Leitl came under media criticism because, in addition to his function as President of the Chamber of Commerce from 2004 to June 2018, he was also chairman of the legally prescribed, monopoly-active social insurance company for the commercial economy (SVA). According to the criticism, this would represent a conflict of conscience . In June 2018, Harald Mahrer succeeded him as chairman of the SVA.

The lawyer and president of the Linz Higher Regional Court, Katharina Lehmayer, is his sister, the legal scholar Barbara Leitl-Staudinger is his daughter.

politics

From 1990 to 2000 Leitl was a member of the Upper Austrian State Parliament and State Economic Council of Upper Austria ; Deputy governor from 1995 to 2000 . From 1999 to 2017 he was federal chairman and president of the Austrian Economic Association , a sub-organization of the ÖVP. On December 18, 2017, he was succeeded by the previous Minister of Economics and Science, Harald Mahrer .

In 2000 he took up his post as President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (successor to Leopold Maderthaner ). He was re-elected twice in this capacity, in 2004 and 2009. On May 18, 2018, he handed over the office to Harald Mahrer. From 2002 to 2005 he also held the office of President of the European Chamber of Commerce EUROCHAMBRES for two periods (since 2006 Honorary President). In October 2017 he was elected President of Eurochambres for the second time, for a two-year term from January 1, 2018. In October 2019 he was re-elected as President of Eurochambres for a further two years.

From 2004 to June 2018 he was chairman of the social insurance institute for commercial enterprises . Leitl has been an honorary member of the European Economic Association of the European People's Party SME Europe since 2013 , after serving as President of the former SME Union from 2005 to 2009.

Leitl's statement in the election campaign at the beginning of September 2013 caused a sensation that Austria was “run down” (run-down, run-down), was only mediocre by international standards. He was referring to the deteriorated ranking of the Swiss business institute IMD . The statement was received controversially within and outside the ÖVP. Despite similar statements ( Maria Fekter described Austria as “battered”), there was also a lot of criticism, including from her own party. Austria is doing well in the international ranking, is competitive, but there is a lack of willingness on the part of politicians to reform and sustainable investments and labor market efficiency. Leitl's statement is "partly correct."

In December 2019 he was elected President of the European Movement Austria (EBÖ) to succeed Jörg Leichtfried .
