Life

1996 by Hortensia Fussy designed monument on Rudolf-Sallinger-Platz

As a trained bricklayer and master stonemason , Rudolf Sallinger ran his wife's stonemason business with around 50 employees in Vienna- Margareten from 1943 . As a student, Sallinger applied for admission to the NSDAP in April 1938 , in which he referred to his political activities for the NSDAP in the form of distribution of scatter labels and a police penalty in 1933. However, the application was rejected in 1941 because Sallinger's activity during the “ fighting time ” did not “meet the requirements for registration”.

After the end of the Second World War he was active in various functions in the business representation, such as in the guild . From 1953 he was the curator of the Economic Development Institute in Vienna. The WIFI Vienna was built on the site of the former Rotschild Hospital on the Währinger Gürtel.

His best-known activity was as President of the Federal Chamber of Commerce from February 14, 1964 to December 1990, when he was no longer running due to age. He took over the office from Julius Raab, who had died shortly before . Under him the network of foreign missions of the Austrian economy was built up worldwide.

From 1966 to 1980 he was also chairman of the Austrian Economic Association and member of the National Council .

A main concern for him has always been the functioning of the social partnership , which he lived at the same time as the then trade union president Anton Benya as a counterpart, which earned him great recognition. His behavior was viewed critically in the dispute over the construction of the Hainburg power plant , which he, like Benya, campaigned for.

Sallinger, who was influential in the ÖVP, is also considered the kingmaker of Erhard Busek first and then Wolfgang Schüssel .
