The Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global organization that has 200,000 members in 5,000 independent local organizations and more than 100 states and territories. The foundation, based in St. Louis , aims to give people between the ages of 18 and 40 development opportunities so that they are able to bring about positive change in society. The members are also known as Jaycees .
philosophy
The organization assumes that positive social developments can only be achieved to a limited extent through government action. Rather, changes are set in motion by responsible citizens. Organizationally and personally, the members should be enabled to bring about such positive changes through local, national and international initiatives. One expression of this idea is the one-year-to-lead principle, according to which key management functions in the organization are subject to the rotation principle, so that as many members as possible can be given the opportunity to gain leadership experience.
The members see themselves as global citizens who all have both rights and responsibilities and share certain goals. These common goals are to be achieved through civic engagement and social responsibility and citizens worldwide benefit.
The individual actions are local, but are carried out with an awareness of their international context and their global effects.
history
The first local organization was founded in 1915 as Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA) by Henry Giessenbier in St. Louis , Missouri . Other local organizations followed; the activity was initially limited to the USA . In 1944 internationalization took place; local units were established in eight other states and the organization was renamed Junior Chamber International .
Organization and structure
Junior Chamber International is run by a President. This is elected for a term of one calendar year. Following the principle of rotation , there is no provision for a new term of office . The President of 2014 is Shine Thattuparambil Bhaskaran ( India ).
The President works on the Board of Directors with members who are also elected for a calendar year and who perform the following functions:
- four Executive Vice Presidents , each of whom is particularly responsible for one geographic area ("Area"),
- seventeen Vice Presidents ,
- the General Legal Counsel , the legal advisor,
- the treasurer , the treasurer and
- the Immediate Past President , the president of the previous calendar year.
The local units as well as the regional and national organizations that have come together in JCI are legally and organizationally independent. This can be seen, among other things, from the fact that they work together in different ways with local governments and chambers of industry and commerce . In German-speaking countries, the Wirtschaftsjunioren Deutschland ( Germany ), Junge Wirtschaft ( Austria ) and Junior Chamber International Switzerland ( Switzerland ) are members of JCI.
Basically, however, the following structure results:
- Local Organization of Members , also called LOM or “Chapter”, are the local organizations of a city or area. They usually have their own legal structure like that of the club .
- National Organization of Members , also called NOM, is the organization at the level of a state or similar area, such as Hong Kong .
- Area is a geographical area based on the continents.
The organization has been headquartered in Chesterfield, near St. Louis , Missouri , since 2002 .
Partnerships
JCI has been in partnership with the United Nations since 1954. Both organizations are currently working together on the Millennium Development Goals . As part of the United Nations Global Compact , the principles of corporate social responsibility are to be further developed.
There is also a partnership with the United Nations Foundation , the Organización Panamericana de la Salud , UNESCO and the International Chamber of Commerce .
Regular events
An international conference at the level of the geographical organizational units (areas) and a world congress are held annually.
