Frank II von Borsselen ( Dutch : Frank van Borssele ) (* probably 1396; † November 19, 1470 in Den Briel ) was a high Zeeland nobleman.

Life

He was governor of Holland and Zeeland , but is best known as the fourth husband of Countess Jakoba of Holland and Zealand. He was the son of Floris von Borsselen and Oda von Bergen, lord of Sint Maartensdijk , Scherpenisse (both now districts of Tholen ) and Zuylen , and the last legitimate representative of the younger branch of the Borsselen family .

Frank van Borssele (1396-1470)

His sovereign was Jakoba , who in 1420 by her uncle Johann III. had been ousted in favor of Philip of Burgundy . From late 1421 to early 1423 Frank von Borsselen played an essential role in the county's financial issues. 1422/23 he was councilor of Count Johann III. and official governor of the country.

The height of his power, however, were the years 1426 to 1432. On March 21, 1426 he - Johann III. died in 1425 - appointed General and Grand Captain of Zeeland by Philip of Burgundy. In 1428 Jakoba recognized her father's regulations in the Delft Reconciliation Treaty , but remained in custody and had Frank von Borsselen as a guard. In 1430 he became governor of Burgundy and “Opperhoutvester” of Holland, and in the same year he became lord of Gorinchem , Leerdam , De Leede and Schoonrewoerd .

The relationship between Jakoba and her guardian developed during this time in such a way that the two secretly married on July 1, 1432 in The Hague . When Philipp found out, he had Frank von Borsselen arrested. In return for the release of her fourth husband, Jakoba transferred all rights to the counties of Holland, Zealand and Hainaut to the Burgundy on April 12, 1433 in the Hague Treaty . She then withdrew into private life, married Frank von Borsselen on March 1, 1434 in Sint Maartensdijk, his main residence, again in public, but died of tuberculosis only three years later .

In the year of their public wedding, Frank von Borsselen was made Count of Ostervant , and in 1445 even Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece . Frank von Borsselen outlived his wife by 34 years.

Frank and Jakoba had no children, but (after the death of his wife) he still became a father. From an illegitimate relationship with Margaretha van Herzele ( jonkvrouwe Margriete van Aersele , died on March 5, 1496), the illegitimate daughter of Daniel von Herzele, Herr von Lilaer , he had a son, Floris Bastaert van Borssele, 1459 attested, † 1505, Mr. von Cortgene , Emelisse , Welle (today part of Denderleeuw ) and Pamele .

Footnotes

  1. In the European Family Tables Volume II (1984) Plate 23 (Valois) Frank von Borsselen is referred to as Marshal of France , but not in Volume XVIII (1998) Plate 38 (Borsselen); there is obviously a confusion with Wolfhart VI. von Borsselen , who lived at the same time and actually had the marshal's baton
