Margrave of Veere and Vlissingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title of Margrave of Veere and Vlissingen , based on the places Veere and Vlissingen in Zeeland , was given as Marquis de Vere et de Vlissingen , even though both places are in the Dutch-speaking area.

Since the end of the 13th century, the lords of Veere were the lords of Borsselen , who also received Vlissingen in the middle of the 15th century. Both fiefs were bequeathed to illegitimate members of the House of Burgundy , for whom the (Spanish-Dutch) margravate Vere and Vlissingen was established in 1555. Veere and Vlissingen came to the House of Hénin through the daughter of the first and only margrave from this family . The last Marquis de Vere et de Vlissingen from the Hénin family died in 1804.
