Charles Smith Olden (born February 19, 1799 in Princeton , New Jersey , † April 7, 1876 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Jersey from 1860 to 1863 .

Early years and political advancement

Charles Olden attended public schools in his home country. After that he became a successful businessman and trader. His business activities took him through Pennsylvania to Louisiana and back to New Jersey. Between 1845 and 1851 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate . After the founding of the Republican Party , he joined it. In 1859 he was elected as their candidate for governor of his state.

Governor of New Jersey

Olden began his three-year term on January 17, 1860. The first phase of his term in office was overshadowed by the heated discussions leading up to the American Civil War . After the outbreak of open fighting in April 1861, New Jersey also had to make its contribution to this war. The state was on the side of the Union and the governor had to meet certain quotas for soldiers and supplies set by the federal government. Almost all economic sectors had to be converted to the new war-related situation.

Olden's tenure ended on January 20, 1863. Between 1868 and 1873 he was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court of Appeals and from 1869 to 1875 he was also a member of the Riparian Commission . Olden was also a member of a New Jersey State Sinking Fund Commission . He was also a treasurer and later a curator at Princeton University . Charles Olden died in April 1876. He was married to Phoebe Ann Smith. The couple had an adopted daughter.
