Governor of New Jersey and another résumé

Edward Stokes began his three-year term on January 17, 1905. During his reign, New Jersey railroad companies were taxed higher and some reform laws were passed. Due to a constitutional clause, he was not allowed to run again directly in 1907. So he resigned from his office on January 21, 1908. In 1912 he made a second, also unsuccessful, attempt to be elected to the US Senate, and in 1913 a renewed candidacy for the office of governor of New Jersey failed. Between 1919 and 1927, Stokes was chairman of his party in New Jersey. Another attempt at a seat in the US Senate failed in 1928. In 1936 he was chairman of the Republican congress in New Jersey.

Stokes was President of the Mechanics National Bank of Trenton and the New Jersey Bankers Association. The October 1929 stock market crash hit Stokes hard. He lost a lot of equity. For this reason, in 1939, the state of New Jersey offered him a pension of $ 2,500 a year. Stokes refused this offer. Instead, he became an advisor to the New Jersey's Public Information Office . Edward Stokes died in November 1942.
