Elias P. Seeley
Elias Pettit Seeley (born November 10, 1791 in Bridgeton , New Jersey , † August 23, 1846 in Trenton , New Jersey) was an American politician and in 1833 governor of the state of New Jersey.
Career
Elias Seeley attended the public schools in his home country. After studying law, he began practicing law in Cumberland County . Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party . Between 1829 and 1833 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate ; in 1833 he was its vice-president. After the resignation of Governor Samuel L. Southard , who took up a mandate as a US Senator in Washington, DC , Seeley was elected by the legislature as his successor, with the requirement to end the current term of office. He was governor of his state between February 27 and October 23, 1833. During this time he was unable to set any lasting political accents.
After the end of his short term as governor, he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly for several terms . Elias Seeley died in August 1846. He had two children with his wife, Jane Champneys.
