Elisha Lawrence

Elisha Lawrence (* 1746 ; † July 23, 1799 ) was an American politician and in 1790 incumbent governor of the state of New Jersey .

Career

As early as 1788 he was justice of the peace in Monmouth County . He was a member of the Federalist Party and the New Jersey Senate , which was then called the New Jersey Legislative Council . Between 1789 and 1792 and again in 1795 he was vice-president of this body. In this capacity he ended his tenure after the death of Governor William Livingston . He was between July 25 and October 30, 1790 acting governor of New Jersey. Lawrence was also a member of the Monmouth County Council. Between 1795 and 1796 he was chairman of this body.
