John J. Farmer (born June 24, 1957 in Jersey City , New Jersey ) is an American politician . He was Attorney General from 1999 to 2002 and on January 8, 2002 for 90 minutes governor of the state of New Jersey.
Career
John Farmer studied law at Georgetown University until 1979 . He was then employed by Judge Alan B. Handler , then a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court. From 1988 to 1990 he worked for a law firm in Morristown . Between 1990 and 1994, he served as the Assistant Attorney General for the New Jersey District. Since 1997, Farmer has served on the advisory board of Governor Christine Todd Whitman . On January 15, 1999, he was appointed by the governor as the new attorney general of New Jersey. This office is equivalent to that of a Minister of Justice. After his confirmation by the State Senate , Farmer was able to take up his new office on June 3 of the same year. He held this office until 2002 under Governor Donald DiFrancesco .
On January 8, 2002, the term of office of DiFrancesco, who was both governor and Senate president, ended. Since there was no lieutenant governor in New Jersey , the state constitution required the attorney general to assume the office of governor until the new Senate president was sworn in. After about 90 minutes, John Bennett was established as the new Senate President. This then also took over the office of governor. Soon after, Farmer's time as attorney general ran out. He later became an advisor to the commission investigating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . Today Farmer works as a partner in a law firm. He also teaches law at Rutgers University .
