Life

Dan Mathews is senior vice president of animal rights organization PETA. He is known as the originator of most of PETA's controversial and spectacular campaigns, such as: As the anti-fur ad I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur (dt. Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur ) or campaigns with Morrissey , Pamela Anderson , Pink , Nina Hagen , Paul McCartney and Dirk Bach. Commenting on PETA's strategies for publicly launching animal welfare issues in close collaboration with celebrities, Mathews says, “Abused animals are not an issue people like to deal with. If you pack the message with sex, humor and celebrities, you have a better chance of reaching people ”.

For almost 25 years, Mathews has been uncompromisingly committed to animal rights and against fur. Multiple arrests could not prevent him from doing so. On the contrary: "When you consider how animals suffer, we don't go far enough," says Dan Mathews.

In 2000, the American gay lifestyle magazine Genre rated him one of the most influential people of the new century. When asked by the magazine who he considered one of the most influential homosexuals himself, he jokingly named the gunman Andrew Cunanan "because he got Gianni Versace to stop using fur." In 2007, Mathews was ranked 37th of the 50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America in OUT magazine .

In 2007, his autobiography was published, in which Dan Mathews reports on his school days, where he was beaten up again and again as an open gay man by his classmates, about his two-year stay in Italy, where the teenager prostituted himself, to his time as a model and actor his career at PETA, where he worked his way up from operator to vice president. The translation of his memoirs RESPECT! appeared in March 2009.
