David Ogden Watkins

David Ogden Watkins (born June 8, 1862 in Woodbury , New Jersey , †  June 20, 1938 ) was an American politician and acting governor of the state of New Jersey from 1898 to 1899 .

Career

David Watkins attended local schools in his home country. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1893. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1886 and 1890 he was Mayor of Woodbury Town. He then belonged to the city council of this municipality from 1892 to 1898, where he was its chairman between 1895 and 1897.

From 1887 to 1899 he was also a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . In 1898 he was president of this body and had to take over the office of governor between October 18, 1898 and January 16, 1899 after the resignation of Governor Foster MacGowan Voorhees . On that day, Voorhees, elected in November 1898, returned to office. After that, Watkins resumed his seat in the House of Representatives.

Between 1900 and 1903 he was a federal attorney for the district of New Jersey. Between 1903 and 1909 he was the New Jersey Banking and Insurance Commissioner . At the same time he was from 1904 to 1908 on the party executive of the Republicans of New Jersey. After 1909, David Watkins did not appear politically. He was married to Lidie M. Andrews.
