family

The Schenk von Tautenburg belong dynastically to the Schenk von Vargula . Georg Schenk von Tautenburg is the son of Wilhelm Schenk von Tautenburg (1456–1520) and his wife Kunigunde von Tettau. Some of his brothers also fought in the Netherlands. His brother Ernst (1488–1527) died during the siege of Hattem . Wilhelm (1491–1531), married to Margarethe von Ebersreuth, went back to Germany.

Life

Georg Schenk von Tautenburg came to the Netherlands in 1496 with Friedrich von Baden (1458–1517), the new bishop of Utrecht, and in 1502 was appointed administrator of Vollenhove . There he built Toutenburg Castle . He was a supporter of Emperor Charles V in his efforts to achieve hegemony in the Netherlands. In particular, Karl von Egmond , Duke of Geldern, opposed the emperor. Von Tautenburg and his family were raised to Baron von Tautenburg in 1520 . In 1521 he was appointed governor of Friesland. In 1522 he was to conquer Coevorden . In preparation for the action, he captured Hasselt and besieged the Genemuiden fortress in Overijssel, where he was wounded by a musket ball . Coevorden had meanwhile been taken over by Johan von Selbach for Duke Karl von Egmond (Geldern).

When he pursued the former commandant of Genemuiden Kasper von Merwick with his troops, he was crushed by Karl von Egmond . Nevertheless, he was able to keep his position. When he attacked Hattem fortress in the course of the war in 1527, his brother Ernst fell. In 1531 he was honored with the Order of the Golden Fleece for his services .

In April 1535 he destroyed a troop of Anabaptists near Oldeklooster in Friesland, and one of the dead there was Menno Simons' brother . For him it was a reason to give up his priesthood. When Meinhart von Hamme - a Landsknechtsführer of Karl von Egmond - occupied Dam (=  Appingedam ) near Groningen in May 1536 , the city of Groningen decided to pay homage to Georg Schenk , which happened on June 8, 1536. Shortly thereafter, this Hamme defeated at Westerwolde , who then retreated to Appingedam. After a siege until September 17, Hamme surrendered in Appingedam. Afterwards von Tautenburg besieged the fortress Coevorden on behalf of Emperor Charles V , which was still in the possession of Geldern. November 1536 gave Johan von Selbach , castellan of Coevorden and Drost of the province of Drenthe (1522–1536), after a two-month siege on the fortress. An honorable withdrawal was agreed, von Selbach was allowed to withdraw for Geldern with his soldiers, all material and personal belongings. So von Tautenburg also became governor of the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

He died in 1540 as a result of the gunshot wound he suffered in 1522 off Genemuiden.
