Epitaph in the collegiate church

Friedrich von Baden (born July 9, 1458 , † September 24, 1517 in Lier ) was the non-ruling Margrave of Baden and, as Friedrich IV. Bishop of Utrecht .

He is the son of Margrave Karl I of Baden and Catherine of Austria .

In 1496 the cathedral chapter elected the margrave's son as bishop. The margrave was canon of Utrecht and treasurer of the Cologne Cathedral College. He was also recommended by Karl von Egmond, Count von Geldern, the Archduke Maximilian I and his son Philipp . On September 17, 1496, Friedrich was able to make his ceremonial entry into Utrecht.

With his election, the cathedral chapter had hoped for a calm future. But Friedrich was not a pastor and church affairs interested him little. He was constantly involved in wars with his neighbors: with the Duke of Kleve , with the Lords of Wisch and even with Karl von Egmond. He financed this with high taxes for his subjects. But he was not very successful with these wars. And wanted to make a pact when he and the King of France to be also bishop of Metz, he had at the instigation of Emperor I. Maximilian go. He retired to Lier , where he died the following year.

He found his grave in the collegiate church of Baden-Baden .
