Teresa Żylis-Gara

Teresa Geralda Żylis-Gara (born January 23, 1930 in Landwarów near Wilna , † August 28, 2021 ) was a Polish opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

She received her training at the Music Academy in Łódź . In 1954 she won first prize at the Warsaw Music Competition and made her debut in 1956 in the title role of Stanisław Moniuszko's opera Halka at the Cracow Opera . After she had won a 3rd prize at the ARD singing competition in 1960 , she moved to Germany , where she first worked at the Theater Oberhausen , from 1962 at the Theater Dortmund and from 1965 to 1969 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf . Żylis-Gara also appeared as a concert singer.

She appeared at the festivals in Glyndebourne, Orange and Salzburg , as well as at the Grand Opéra Paris , the Covent Garden Opera in London , at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires , at the opera houses in Mexico and San Francisco , the Vienna State Opera , and the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Hamburg State Opera . From 1969 to 1984 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York .

Later she worked in Poland as a singing teacher.
