ARD international music competition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ARD International Music Competition is one of the most renowned and largest competitions for classical music . Many of today's world-famous artists were promoted by him and were then able to expand their careers. These include Jessye Norman , Maurice André , Francisco Araiza , Hermann Baumann , Natalia Gutman , Christoph Eschenbach , Mitsuko Uchida , Bernd Glemser , Anna Malikova , Günther Kaunzinger , Thomas Quasthoff , Ivan Rebroff , Juri Baschmet , Christian Tetzlaff , Sharon Kam , Heinz Holliger , Peter Sadlo , Branimir Slokar, Isabelle Moretti and the Quatuor Ébène . Musicians of all nations are eligible to participate. The maximum age depends on the category and is usually between 25 and 28 years. Every year around 200 candidates from 35 to 40 countries compete. The organizer is the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation .

prehistory

From 1947 to 1950 Radio Frankfurt held a “competition for young soloists”. Already at the first competition there was the discovery of two female voices who were soon to be among the world's elite: Christa Ludwig and Erika Köth . Became known z. B. also the flautist Karlheinz Zöller and the pianist Robert-Alexander Bohnke .

The ARD has developed the idea of bringing together young musicians from around the world continued and organized since 1952 every year a competition round. This developed into a singular and highly valued institution, precisely because of its annually changing offer for musicians. Even today, now hosted by Bayerischer Rundfunk , it offers young artists a platform - both solo and chamber music.

The last innovation in the competition took place in 2001: Since then, prominent composers have been commissioned to write compositions, thereby strengthening the presence of contemporary music.

Festival of the ARD Prize Winners

The unavoidable competitive situation among the applicants prompted the competition management to create an experience of musical togetherness, at least afterwards. In 2001, a concert series was developed with the ARD Prize Winners Festival in which musicians from all over the world rehearse chamber music works together and perform them at various locations.
