Wilhelm Schwinghammer (* 1977 in Vilsbiburg ) is a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Wilhelm Schwinghammer was born in Vilsbiburg in the Bavarian district of Landshut and grew up in Taufkirchen / Vils in the district of Erding. As a boy he sang with the Regensburger Domspatzen , whose music high school he attended until his Abitur in 1998. Schwinghammer studied singing with Harald Stamm at the Berlin University of the Arts from 2000 and was a master student of Kurt Moll and Marjana Lipovšek . As a student he sang a. a. in the vocal ensembles Collegium Vocale Gent (directed by Philippe Herreweghe ) and Sette Voci (directed by Peter Kooij ). Schwinghammer sang Saul in Handel's oratorio under the direction of René Jacobs .

In 2003 the Hamburg State Opera accepted Schwinghammer into the International Opera Studio. In 2006 he was accepted into the permanent ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera. His repertoire includes a. Sarastro from the Magic Flute , Figaro from Le nozze di Figaro , Fasolt from Rheingold , Fafner from Siegfried , King Heinrich from Lohengrin , King Marke from Tristan and Isolde , Landgrave Hermann from Tannhäuser , Daland from The Flying Dutchman , Orestes from Elektra , Leporello from Don Giovanni , Sparafucile from Rigoletto , Rocco from Fidelio and Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau from Der Rosenkavalier . He has been working as a freelancer since 2017.

2008 Wilhelm Schwinghammer sang at the opening of the Bundesliga season 08/09 in Munich's Allianz Arena , 2011 as the Westfalenstadion the opening of the 2011/2012 season , the national anthem .

In 2005 Wilhelm Schwinghammer made his debut at the Salzburg Festival alongside Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón as Dr. Grenvil in La traviata . In 2012 he appeared for the first time at the Bayreuth Festival and sang King Heinrich in Lohengrin . He also took on this role in Bayreuth from 2013–2015. In 2014 and 2015 he also performed Fasolt in Frank Castorf's Rheingold . In 2019 he returned to Bayreuth for the new production by Tannhäuser . In 2013 he sang König Marke in the new production of Tristan und Isolde at the Washington National Opera . In 2014 he made his debut at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as Titurel in Parsifal . In 2016 Wilhelm Schwinghammer was as Sarastro in The Magic Flute at the Los Angeles Opera, as Fasolt at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, in Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Tanglewood Festival with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons and as Rocco in Fidelio under Zubin Mehta with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to experience. In 2018 he sang Il re di Skozia in a new production of Ariodante at the Vienna State Opera, in the same year he made his role debut as Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the Royal Stockholm Opera House. In 2019 he appeared as Orestes in a new production of Elektra at the Toronto Opera and as Rocco in Fidelio at the Hamburg State Opera.
