The Regensburger Domspatzen music high school is a Roman Catholic school for boys in Regensburg . It is located in the eastern part of the city and serves as a state-recognized music and natural science high school for the members of the cathedral choir, the Regensburger Domspatzen .

history

The grammar school goes back to a cathedral school founded by Bishop Wolfgang von Regensburg in 975 , making it one of the oldest schools in the German-speaking area . It is therefore closely associated with the cathedral choir at Regensburg Cathedral . A foundation of the cathedral chapter from the 16th century, the cathedral priest, was used to set up and maintain a boarding school for the cathedral students. After the Principality of Regensburg became Bavarian in 1810, the Kingdom of Bavaria and the cathedral chapter, which had previously been solely responsible , shared the financing from 1819. In 1934 the cathedral chapter was able to acquire a property in Regensburg's Orleanstrasse, which the cathedral patron moved into a year later. Two years later, plans for a new music high school were developed and approved. This was to be built under the direction of Theobald Schrems in the city park and largely financed by Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler . Since nothing came of these plans, the current state-recognized music high school could only be founded in 1948.

Ludwig Zehetner taught German and English at the Musikgymnasium from 1968 to 2002 (since 1970 as a civil servant for life) and in 1988 also became deputy headmaster .

School profile

In addition to musical training, Christian education is a key element of the Catholic school. For the pupils from Regensburg and the surrounding area the possibility of all-day care is offered up to and including the 10th grade.

The language order is either English-Latin or Latin-English. After having passed the first or second foreign language, French can also be chosen. The grammar school is a Catholic school; Protestant students are also accepted. Almost half of the students live in the boarding school attached to the school .

Since 2013 there is a newly built four-class elementary school on the grounds of the music high school. The foundation of the Regensburger Domspatzen , which is supported by the Regensburg Cathedral Chapter and the Association of Friends of the Regensburg Cathedral Choir , is responsible for the music high school with boarding school . This foundation is also responsible for the elementary school and the cathedral choir, the Regensburger Domspatzen.

Since 1996 there has been a school partnership between the Regensburger Domspatzen music school and the Collège-Lycée Saint Joseph in Carpentras .

Boarding school director

The boarding school was subordinate to the following boarding directors:

  • 1953–1958: Friedrich Zeitler
  • 1959: Georg Friedrich Zimmermann
  • 1959–1970: Siegfried Lintl
  • 1970–1971: Hubertus Schöner
  • 1972–1975: Franz Xaver Kohlbeck
  • 1975–1996: Dr. Herbert Winterholler
  • 1996–2001: Matthias Effhauser
  • since 2001: Rainer Schinko

Cases of abuse

The cases of abuse at the Regensburger Domspatzen concerned the elementary school of the Regensburger Domspatzen in Etterzhausen and Pielenhofen as well as the boarding school belonging to the grammar school. Several clergymen were among the suspicious people who were at the school.

Friedrich Zeitler, head of the boarding school (born in Mitterteich in 1918 , ordained in 1949), worked from September 1953 to May 6, 1958 as a religion teacher and prefect at the Regensburg Music High School. He was removed from service by Theobald Schrems because he had "been caught doing immoral acts with two of his protégés". After initially evading prosecution by escaping, he was sentenced to three years in prison in May 1959. From October 1961 to June 1982 he worked as a chaplain at a convent of sisters with an attached girls' school in the diocese of Chur . He retired in 1982 and died in Mitterteich in 1984.

From January 1st to September 1st, 1959, Georg Friedrich Zimmermann was director of the cathedral grammar school and the boarding school of the cathedral inspectors in Regensburg. He was convicted of sexual abuse of teenagers in 1971.

Sturmius Wagner, later pastor in Dietenhofen-Großhabersdorf, worked as an assistant and prefect in the boarding school from April 1970 to February 1972 and abused at least one student; it is reported by five other students who have contacted us. He was suspended by the bishop of Eichstätt in April 2010.

The former cathedral music director Georg Ratzinger , who headed the Domspatzen choir from 1964 to 1994, stated that he had no knowledge of the abuse cases. This contrasts with reports from several victims who, according to their statements, turned to Ratzinger in 1970/71 and reported sexual assaults.

In March 2010, the charge was made that there had been sexual abuse until at least 1992, the perpetrators in these cases being older students.

Former cathedral sparrows from the intern-at.de archive assume , according to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung from November 2014, around a hundred boys' choirs who were affected by sexual abuse.

In April 2015, the Regensburg diocese announced that it would cooperate with the victim organization Weißer Ring to investigate physical and sexual abuse in the Domspatzen choir. Since then, the diocese administration has had the incidents at the Regensburger Domspatzen cleared up with the help of an independent lawyer. The lawyer recommended by the White Ring, Ulrich Weber, has now set up a special website through which those affected can contact him.

Weber stated in January 2016 that there was a high number of victims of violence: “231 reports were received. The victims speak unanimously of the fact that a third of the children were also beaten. In the core period from 1953 to 1992 we are talking about 2,450 students. So I currently have no reason to doubt a total of 600-700 victims, "
